Understanding Long Sentences

Understanding Long Sentence বলতে সে sentence কে বুঝায় যে sentence-এ একটি principal clause এবং এক বা একাধিক subordinate clause বা একাধিক principal বা co-ordinate clause থাকে।

Long Sentence-কে analysis করার নিয়ম:

(১) যদি Sentence-টি complex হয় তাহলে প্রথমে ঐ Sentence-এর Principal Clauseগুলো চিহ্নিত করতে হবে এবং তার Subordinate Clause সমূহ চিহ্নিত করতে হবে।

যেমন-I met a boy who was poor because his father died long ago.

উপরের sentenceটি complex sentence যা একটি principal clause ও ২টি subordinate clause নিয়ে গঠিত।

ব্যাখ্যা: I met a boy principal clause এবং who was poor, subordinate adjective clause কারণ তার antecedent a boy কে modify করেছে এবং নিয়মানুযায়ী তা a boy nounটির পরে বসেছে। এবং because his father died long ago subordinate adverb clause কারণ তা conjunction because দ্বারা শুরু হয়েছে এবং তা কারণ নির্দেশ করে।

Example 2: When I was going to college. I saw that some boys were playing on the street

which was very busy. 

ব্যাখ্যাঃ উপরের sentence-টিতে ১টি principal clause এবং তিনটি subordinate clause আছে।

When I was going to college. Subordinate adverb clause কারণ তা subordinate conjunction when দিয়ে শুরু করেছে।

I saw principal clause এবং that some boys were playing in the street - Subordinate noun clause কারণ তা principal clause-এর verb saw-এর object হিসেবে কাজ করে এবং নিয়ম অনুযায়ী that দ্বারা শুরু হয়েছে। উল্লেখ্য subordinate noun clause যখন verb-এর object রূপে কাজ করে তখন তা সাধারণত

that দ্বারা শুরু হয়। এক্ষেত্রেও subordinate noun cluase টি that দ্বারা শুরু হয়েছে।

আবার which was very busy subordinate adjective clause কারণ তা antecedent রূপে ব্যবহৃত street কে modify করে এবং নিয়মানুযায়ী street noun টির পরে বসেছে। 

Example 3: The boy went to market and bought some sweets and was happy.

ব্যাখ্যা: উপরের sentenceটি co-ordinate clause কারণ তা তিনটি সমজাতীয় clause (Principal/Independent clause) co-ordinating conjunction and দ্বারা যুক্ত হয়েছে।

Example 4: He came to college and met me.

ব্যাখ্যা: উপরের sentenceটি Double sentence কারণ তা ২টি principal clause দ্বারা গঠিত এবং co- ordinating conjunction and দ্বারা যুক্ত হয়েছে।

Example 5: The teacher entered the classroom and called over the rolls and started writing on the board.

ব্যাখ্যা: উপরের sentenceটি Mulitple sentence কারণ তা তিনটি সমজাতীয় principal clause দ্বারা গঠিত ও co-ordinating conjunction and দ্বারা যুক্ত হয়েছে।

Example 6: Since education is primarily concerned with the acquisition of knowledge, we know that supreme purpose of education is to help the flowering minds who, one day, will lead the country.

ব্যাখ্যা: উপরের sentenceটি একটি principal clause ও তিনটি subordinate clause এর সমন্বয়ে গঠিত

একটি complex sentence.

We know Principal clause

Since education is primarily concerned with the acquisition of knowledge = subordinate adverbial clause কারণ তা since দিয়ে শুরু হয়েছে।

that supreme purpose of education is to help the flowering minds = subordinate nous clause কারণ তা that দিয়ে শুরু হয়েছে এবং principal clause we know এর -know verbs object হিসেবে কাজ করে।

who, one day, will lead the country = subordinate adjective clause কারণ তার antecedent minds-কে modify করেছে।

Example 7: When emperor Humayun died. his son Akbar ascended the throne and was helped by Bairam Khan who administered the royal administration excellently because he was a wise man.

এটি একটি Multiple sentence.

When emperor Humayun died = subordinate adverbial clause কারণ তা adverbial clause of time 'when' দ্বারা শুরু হয়েছে।

his son Akbar ascended the throne and was helped by Bairam Khan coordinate clause

কারণ এখানে দুটি Principal / Indepentdent / Co-ordinate Clause, Co-ordinating conjunction

and দ্বারা যুক্ত হয়েছে এবং who administered the royal administration excellently subordinate adjective clause কারণ

তা তার antecedent Bairam Khan-কে modify করেছে।

because he was a wise man = subordinate adverbial clause কারণ তা adverbial clause of cause 'because' দ্বারা শুরু হয়েছে। 

Example 8: Alexander collected many soldiers. made them well trained in warefare and

conquered many parts of the world. উপরের sentenceটি multiple sentence কারণ তা তিনটি principal coordinate clause দ্বারা গঠিত।

Example 9: We made a picnic and enjoyed it.

উপরের sentenceটি compound sentence বা Double sentence, কারণ তা দুটি principal / independent clause এর সমন্বয়ে গঠিত এবং co-ordinating conjunction 'and' দ্বারা যুক্ত। উল্লেখ্য coordinating conjunction দ্বারা যুক্ত দুটি principal clause দ্বারা গঠিত sentence কে Double

sentence ও বলে। 

Example 10: Students should read more so that they can make good results because good results will help them to get a good job which will go a long way to draw a better salary.

উপরের sentenceটি complex sentence কারণ তা একটি principal clause ও তিনটি subordinate clause সমন্বয়ে গঠিত। Students should read more = principal clause

so that they can make good results = subordinate adverbial clause কারণ তা adverbial clause

of purpose 'so that' দিয়ে শুরু হয়েছে। because good results will help them to get a good job = subordinate adverbial clause কারণ তা

adverbial clause of cause (because) দ্বারা শুরু হয়েছে।

which will go a long way to draw a better salary = subordinate adjective clause কারণ তার antecedent রূপে ব্যবহৃত job কে modify করেছে।

Example 11: When I heard that he had an accident, I at once went to his house and gave him all the help that I could give because he was short of money.

উপরের sentenceটি একটি multiple sentence কারণ তা দুটি principal clause ও তিনটি subordinate clause এর সমন্বয়ে গঠিত।

When I heard = subordinate adverbial clause কারণ তা adverbial clause of time 'when' দ্বারা শুরু

হয়েছে।

that he had an accident = subordinate noun clause কারণ তা that দ্বারা শুরু হয়েছে।

I at once went to his house = principal clause.

and gave him all the help = co-ordinate principal clause.

that I could give = subordinate adjective clause কারণ তা তার antecedent রূপে ব্যবহৃত help-কে modify করেছে। because he was short of money = subordinate adverbial clause কারণ তা subordinate

adverbial clause of reason because' দ্বারা শুরু হয়েছে। 

বিঃদ্রঃ Multiple sentence এ সব সময় যে co-ordinate clause থাকবে এমন কোন ধরা বাধা নিয়ম নেই। Co-ordinate clause ছাড়াও সমজাতীয় subordinate clause থাকতে পারে। এখানে উপরের sentence টিতে co-ordinate clause ছাড়াও subordinate clause আছে।
